ALAGAD Party-List was founded in November 1997. Accredited by the COMELEC in the same year representing the urban poor sector, it ran in the first party-list election held in May 1998 and landed 3rd among the successful sectoral parties, obtaining one (1) seat in the 11th Congress (1998-2001). In the last May 2004 party-list elections, the party again emerged as one of the 15 elected party-list groups in the 13th Congress. With its total votes of more than 340,000, ALAGAD garnered one (1) seat and is currently represented in the House by Rep. Rodante D. Marcoleta.
ALAGAD is aligned with the majority, through a coalition, but acts independently on issues that impact on its sector and those which tend to serve the best interest of its constituents. Opposed to street anarchy and political adventurism, the Party through its representative (Rep. Marcoleta), endorsed the impeachment complaint filed against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in June last year in order to uphold the rule of law and the constitutional processes.
ALAGAD’s advocacy is anchored on the alleviation of extreme poverty in this country. This is palpably manifest in the nature of the House Bills and Resolutions so far filed and its strong involvement in poverty-related and socially-driven committees. Its ardent support for the passage of House Bill 3773, Millen-nium Development Goals (MDG’s) and planned families, underscores the Party’s recognition of the direct link between poverty and population including the need to legislate an Integrated National Population Program. This is why ALAGAD supported the erstwhile Ligtas Buntis Project of the DOH even as it regularly distributes contraceptives in depressed areas during its outreach programs. |
